This picture is from 2008, the beginning of this 3-year ongoing project. This project is now entering maintenance mode as the invasive vegetation is now more manageable.
This was taken after the 2011 grazing season came to a close. This is a 20-acre project.
Prior to Wells Farm being contacted for this project staff members were trying to maintain the dam by weedeating it, which was proving to be much too large of a project for an army of 3 men. Using goats is a much safer approach due to the nature of this property which features steep terrain, rocky areas as well as the presence of native wildlife such as poisionous snakes and bees.
This before shot is a 3-acre tract of land covered in kudzu. This area is protected as an ecological protected area, so it limited ways to eradicate the kudzu.
This dramatic change only took a herd of 30 goats two weeks to clear off. The herd of goats came back in early October for a second grazing which is extremely beneficial for the eradication of kudzu.
This project at Davidson College located near Charlotte, NC has become part of a 3-year long research project.
This before shot was taken on property owned and maintained by Western Carolina University. It is the site of an old landfill.
This 4-acre tract took 75 goats around 5 weeks to complete. This project is slated to continue in 2012.
This landfill was closed and capped off in 1994 and it became the responsibility of Western Carolina University to maintain this landfill. The State of North Carolina displayed concern with groundhogs breaching the cap to the landfill which would compromise the landfill being capped off. Goats provided one of the best solutions for the University given the steepenss of the terrain and for the simple fact that the entire 4-acre tract was covered by kudzu.
This shot at Western Carolina University shows how steep the terrain is.
The goats had no problems navigating the hillside and clearing the kudzu.
The long range plans of the University is to graze the goats during the summer of 2012, then sowing the property in grass.
Wells Farm was contacted in the spring of 2011 by staff at Festiva Resorts to have some property cleared off that had been overtaken by invasive weeds.
Another shot of the steep terrain.
Festiva Resports in Asheville NC is home to their management offices. This property had been overgrown with kudzu, honeysuckle, privett, Tree-of-heaven (ailanthus) as well as general overgrowth. Wells Farm goats were there for about 1 month to complete the project.
Wells Farm is happy to come assess your needs.
